They are the first to show up on the scene of an accident, incident, or crime, responding to more than 240 million 911 calls every year: First responders. This includes paramedics, emergency medical technicians, police officers, firefighters, rescuers, among other trained personnel. According to the American Security Foundation website, there are approximately 891,000 emergency medical service (EMS) professionals in the United States, comprising 600,000 EMTs and 142,000 paramedics, transporting nearly 16 million patients by ambulance every year. There are more than 1 million firefighters, of whom 750,000 are volunteers. As of 2018, 686,665 full-time law enforcement officers work hard in our country to help others.

When I first publicly admitted that I was an alcoholic, and after I published my memoir, friends and colleagues told me I was brave. I suppose many people think that I should have shame around my alcohol use disorder, but I do not. I’m conscious now and a person in long-term recovery. It takes courage to look within and be honest with ourselves. Many people are ashamed or unwilling to see their addiction, partly because of the stigma that exists in our society.

I am a participant in this year’s NYC Midnight Flash Fiction Challenge. It’s my first attempt at fiction writing. The parameters provided for my challenge were to write 1,000 words maximum as a Crime Caper, set in a library, and include a sprinkler. I had 48 hours to write the piece. I received news last night (at midnight, ha!) that my work placed 13th in my genre in a larger pool of 3,500 applicants.
